I chose the lecture about cancer, because it seemed interesting. It was very informing and the man who was speaking was very fascinting. I learned a lot. Notes: There are about 100 million new body cells a day. The mutations can not affect the offspring. In the body there is about 100 trillion cells. By mitosis the cell with mutations replicates itself. The body of defected cells is called a neoplasm. When it gets large enough it will be called a lump or a tumor. If it is not dangerous, it is called a benign tumor (harmless). When it starts to "grow like crazy", gets invasive and breaks off and infiltrates other parts of the body, than it means that the cell metastasizes. Cancer is very hard to cure because there are too many mutations-a neverending fight. Cancer is a by-product of broken mitosis. Even plants have canceres. Phrases: Contact inhibition-cells stop growing for a while. Apoptosis-a cell "kills itself" when recognises that there is something wrong. Bening tumor-harmless lump.
I was watching a video about bacteria. I chose this lecture, because I'm intrested in biology.
Usually bacteria are thought as a bad thing. They cause tuberculosis, Lyme disease, but they can be beneficial too, like in yogurts. Living creatures can be divided into two groups: prokaryotes: bacteria and archaea, eukaryotes: plants, animals, birds, fungi. Prokaryote means no nucleus. Eukaryote has a nucleus. Binary fission – splitting of one bacteria cell into two parts is quite easy, DNA doubles and cell splits. All the necessary substances are divided. Bacterial cells can also exchange their genetic information by using little tubes – it is called conjugation. This constant swapping of DNA can produce resistance to antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria. These were discovered by Adam Fleming in the 20th century. He was using a Petri dish, when he saw that bacterial colonies cannot approach a place where the fungi of Penicillium. The cure to bacterial diseases was found. Bacteria are all-around our body, almost 10% of our mass are bacteria. They can affect our mind or body even without us really knowing it.
It was a very beneficial lecture, also it was quite easy to understand.

Passing Trains I chosed this lecture, because it seemed to be an interesting math exercise. The exercise was about train A(200 meters long) and train B(400 meters long). They run on parallel tracks at constant speeds. When moving in the same direction, A passes B in 15 seconds, but if they run opposite directions then they pass each other in 5 seconds. The question was that how fast each train moving? We must take into consideration that all this is relative. The explications were good, because they were understandable and the graphs were nice too. Actually it was quit easy exercise and every fool will get the point if watching this video. Notes: constant speeds, relative, opposite direction. Mikk Vihmann 12b

If a cell has a defect it will kill itself and make room for healthy cells. The cell itself recognizes the need to do so. Each day about 100 billion new cells are produced in human body. The mutations within the cells aren’t passed to offspring. In total there are around 100 trillion cells in human body (100 000 billion). Cells themselves are complex ecosystems in themselves Through mitosis the cells make a lot of copies of themselves. Neoplasm – defected cells form a big lump and once they´re noticable, we call it a tumor. If the tumor doesn´t do anything dangerous and isn´t replicating a lot faster than it’s neighbouring cells, then it’s called a benign tumor, which means harmless tumor. If these mutated cells start growing rapidly and start infiltrating other tissue, then they’re invasive (super growth). Mutated cells pass broken genetic information. The mutations might appear more frequently and if a piece of the lump breaks off it can travel to other parts of the body. These run-amock cells which travel to different parts of the body are called cancer cells. Cancer isn´t just one type of disease, it’s a whole class of mutations, where cells start exhibiting fast growth and metastasize (moving from one organ or tissue to another). You might be able to kill some of these cells, but the others will continue to mutate and spread. The new cells might not be cureable by method used to kill some of the cells. Cancer is a byproduct of broken DNA replication.
